Good news for those of you struggling with that last inch of belly fat. Across the U.S. border, LipoSonix now has FDA approval and will be available in clinics all across the U.S. In Canada and Europe, LipoSonix has been used for a few years.

Dr Oz recently featured a live demonstration on his show and seemed visibly ‘wowed’!

Here’s the link to see for yourself :

http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/cutting-edge-procedures-pt-3

LipoSonix uses high-intensity, non-invasive, focused ultra sound to attack fat cells up to an inch or more below the surface of the skin without damaging the skin.

The procedure takes about one hour and results are seen gradually over the following few months. The destroyed fat cells are gradually and naturally metabolized. The physician easily manages any discomfort and a bonus of a reduction in cellulite often accompanies an overall reduction in fat.

Apparently saying good bye to love handles, saddle bags and jelly bellies is the number one New Year’s resolution, so if it topped your list for 2012, remember – One Hour, One Treatment, One Size Smaller.

First we saw the before and after photos and we were intrigued, then we tried the new Spot Peel from Dermaceutic and we were sold!

To begin with, it comes from a company in France whose only focus is peels.

(I don’t why I just love products made in France but I do)

It comes with an easy home care kit and is aimed at improving pigmentation, age spots, pregnancy dark spots or melasma, actinic keratoses and post-inflammatory pigmentation. If you don’t feel that a laser is for you, this is definitely an option you’ll want to check out.

Before and after photos on the website:

http://www.dermaceutic.com/peels-with-dermaceutic/index_516.htm

The ingredients are powerful - mandelic acid, idebenone, emblica, retinol and salicylic – acid and it’s still safe for all skin types.

To best prepare your skin, you will start using some of the products in the home care kit two weeks before your peel.

When you come into the clinic for your peel, you can plan to be here for about 30 minutes. Once your peel is applied, you will leave it on for a maximum of 8 hours then just rinse it off with water.

It has a yellowish tinge that you could cover with a mineral make up if you had to go out that night it would be better if used it as an excuse to curl up with a good book or a movie.

For the next 2 days you will experience some redness and tenderness.

Over those first 3 days, you can apply a soothing repair and sun protection cream from your home care kit as often as needed. There are clear instructions on what other products you will continue to use from your kit in your follow-up program.

Even though this peel focuses on pigmentation, anyone can benefit from this kind of intensive peeling especially those suffering with acne.

The four in-clinic peels plus the home care products cost $850 in total.

Have you heard about Glycation?

Simply put, Glycation is a damaging reaction that happens in our bodies when our blood sugar levels rise. It creates inflammation, free radicals, it can make your internal organs stiff, promotes issues in your lungs, eyes, brain, increases chances of heart disease and diabetes but here’s the real clincher…it causes deep wrinkles!

I’ll bet that last one woke you up!

Let’s bypass all the technical stuff for now, I’ll stick it further down for the left brainers.

Here are some of the culprits:

Sugar…and it’s in everything so you need to read the labels. I know it seems unrealistic to avoid sugar altogether but do what you can.

Foods that convert to sugars in the blood: Pasta, breads, rice and anything made with white flour, potatoes, parsnips…all the white stuff.

Tips:

The slow cooker is your friend. Glycation in food happens when cooking at high temperatures, so grilling, deep frying, roasting, pan frying…any method that ‘browns’ food is creating glycation….yeah I know I’m getting depressed too.

Manufactured and junk foods are a nightmare because of the high temperature processes used to cook them.

-Try to switch to a low GI diet – this site can help: www.glycemicindex.com

-Eat protein at the start of every meal

-No fruit or sugars on an empty stomach

Wait there is some good news: Ice cream for dessert after a meal – not on an empty stomach is ok as the fat in the ice cream will slow down the sugar to your bloodstream.

(Keep in mind we are just doing a quick scan of this issue)

What can you do for the skin to help prevent more of this damage?

Antioxidants in your skin care!

Our picks from our clinic:

From Jan Marini:

-C’Esta

-Peptide Extreme

From SkinCeuticals:

-AG.E. Interupter

-Phloretin CF

-C & E Ferulic

-Serum 10

All the products containing CIC2 from SWISSTEC

Do your research on the best antioxidants in supplements, so far it’s looking like carnosine, benfotiamine and alpha lipoic acid are the ones to look up.

You can make a big difference in how you look, feel and age by just giving some of this a shot!

Glycation (sometimes called non-enzymatic glycosylation) is the result of the bonding of a protein or lipid molecule with a sugar molecule, such asfructose or glucose, without the controlling action of an enzyme. All blood sugars are reducing molecules. Glycation may occur either inside the body (endogenous glycation) or outside the body (exogenous glycation). Enzyme-controlled addition of sugars to protein or lipid molecules is termedglycosylation; glycation is a haphazard process that impairs the functioning of biomolecules, whereas glycosylation occurs at defined sites on the target molecule and is required in order for the molecule to function.

Feeling sluggish? Battling the holiday bulge?

Here are a few supplements that will support you more than your best friend who is re-gifting all of her extra boxes of Turtles to you so she won’t eat them.

First off, we have Omega-3 supplements. Found naturally in fish oil, flaxseed oil, or algae, omega-3 can boost your heart and brain health in addition to helping you lose weight.

When you purchase your supplements, do check that the omega-3 (or for that matter, any other supplement you take) is free from those nasty environmental contaminants (mercury, PCBs) and oxidized fats.

Next is CoQ10, you’ve probably heard some buzz about this one in connection to supporting heart health. It also helps protect the brain and is a key factor in energy production. CoQ10 also helps your body burn fats and carbs (as in buttertarts) more efficiently. In fact, it was shown to help normalize elevated blood glucose in some cases.

Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Green tea. Loving it or choking it down, the active ingredients in this tea can boost your metabolic rate by 4 percent for 24 hours after you ingest it and it elevates your adrenaline for an extended period of time, giving you more energy to be active and exercise — what’s not to love?

L-Carnitine. This effective enzyme and powerful antioxidant is found naturally in red meats and regulates fat transfer in the mitochondria (a very big word meaning the power centre your cells), where it’s broken down to create energy. Your body can also produce its own Carnitine, but it may not produce enough to reach optimal levels of this essential enzyme. Several clinical trials show that L-Carnitine and Propionyl-L-Carnitine can help reduce symptoms of angina and improve the ability of people with angina to exercise without chest pain. That doesn’t mean that if you’re having chest pain you can just take Carnitine and carry on…but you know that right?

Lipoic acid. Alpha lipoic acid is thought to work as an antioxidant in both water and fatty tissue, enabling it to enter all parts of the nerve cell and protect it from damage.

Lipoic acid also helps control your blood-glucose levels and can help stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day.

Reminder: Even though many supplements can provide many benefits, they can also have “not so pretty” reactions with some medications. So remember to talk to your doctor about anything new you decide to add to your health regime.

Did you ever think you’d see the day when you could take a test that would tell you your chances of developing diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimer’s or Cancer?
With genetic testing you can check out specific concerns or you can choose an all-inclusive genetic scan that looks for risk — and possible prevention — of more than 1000 diseases.

You can test for everything from skin cancer risk to balding potential. You can also test for the best exercise program for you and which medications would work and which could cause side effects for you.

A couple considering pregnancy can, for about $500 each, have their genes tested to reveal the potential for passing on genetically inherited diseases and disorders.

Unless you are someone who prefers surprises, this is definitely helpful information!

Some genetic tests are performed on a sample of saliva, blood, hair, skin, amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds a fetus during pregnancy), or other tissue. Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic use the saliva technique from Existence Genetics in California (You’ve probably seen that one on CSI a few times.)

The general feeling around genetic testing is make sure you are only asking questions you really want to hear the answers to. You need to consider how having this information could affect your life and what you will do with the information. Would your insurance company reject a future claim? Would you remove both breasts and ovaries if you were highly at risk of breast or ovary cancer?

It is important that you have genetic counseling ahead of time and then you will need to see a health care specialist who can interpret the results for you. At Anti-Aging the cost for these services is $500 in total for a consultation before and after the saliva testing.
The cost of the actual testing will vary depending on how many panels you choose to do. So we’re talking ranges from $500 – $5000.

I suppose if you were to find out that a general anesthetic could make your breathing stop, you might just consider it money well spent.

We talk alot about “fillers” which do exactly what you think they would do…they fill areas below the skin to replace lost volume.

Why do we lose volume if our weight stays the same?
Over time our collagen breaks down in the skin and between that and the ever so unforgiving ‘gravity,’ we are left with unwelcome sagging, lines and flattening of our features.
There are a few factors that move this process along more quickly but that’s another blog.

Most fillers are created from Hyaluronic acid which is found in your own body so they are safe and easily absorbed.
What is the difference between regular fillers and Radiesse?
Think of Radiesse as the construction crew that’s going in to build a scaffolding to support the structure known as ‘your aging face.’
This is a good thing!
Radiesse has calcium-based microspheres (similar to what is found in your bones and teeth) that work with your body encouraging tissue growth in and around the area where it is injected.

The water based ‘filler’gel that the microspheres are suspended in gives you an instant result and begins to dissolve in 2-3 months… that’s when your own collagen starts creating new volume.
The gel is generally gone is 3-4 months and the new collagen is now formed.
At about 9-12 months the microspheres begin to metabolize and you are still left with whatever result your own collagen has produced.
Brilliant right?!

Like Botox, Radiesse has been used for decades for medical, therapeutic purposes so it well established, safe and long lasting.

Look around, every local paper and Internet group discount site is advertising super cheap laser hair removal but does that mean that cheaper is better?
Not always. All lasers are different and some places that are advertising laser hair removal are actually using Intense Pulsed Light hair removal and not laser at all.
Some machines will give you 80% hair reduction in 6 treatments and with other lasers it could take you 20 treatments to get the same results. No matter how much money you think you’ll save, you have to factor in the cost of your time if it takes you twice as long to lose the hair.
If your hair is dark and your skin is light, you should get a good reduction in 6-8 treatments if you have been consistent (about every 6 weeks) and if your skin is darker or your hair is light brown or red you could be looking at up to 10 or 12 treatments for the same results.
It’s a good idea to do your research. Is there a doctor at the clinic or spa you are considering? Doctors have access to much stronger lasers than a spa does. That goes for lasers that provide skin treatments as well.
What if the technician burnt you…would there be a doctor there to support you and help with the healing process?
It’s okay to ask how long your technician has been doing the treatment. Find out what kind of machine they are using and get on the net and check it out.
At Anti-Aging, we use the Syneron e-laser. It gives us a reading with each shot that lets us know if we are killing hair and an automatic shut down if the settings are too high for the skin it is treating…it is a very smart machine.
Our technicians have a minimum of 10 years experience each and Dr Frame oversees of all the treatments in this clinic.
You need to be in good hands and this is one of those areas where deal seeking could cost you a lot more than you think.

Let’s think about how many times you had to shave at least 50% of your body this summer.

Yes that was you, hunched over in the shower, using way too much water and kicking yourself for not picking up that new package of razors while you scrape that very blunt blade up your legs just one more time, being careful not to slip in the bath tub whilst fighting to get to that body part you can’t see.

Or did you torture yourself with months of hot wax ripping out every follicle your mother said was “there for a reason?”

Now we’ve replaced those hairs with bumpy ingrowns which might actually be less attractive than the hairs themselves…hard to say really.

Let’s try to avoid this little dance next year shall we by starting on laser hair removal ASAP!

Reducing your hair permanently is best started when your tan has faded and you haven’t waxed for 8 weeks. Shave 2 days before your appointment and then get in here and let us zap ya! A topical numbing cream and our cool, air-blowing zimmer makes this whole thing WAAAY easier.

Our new E-Laser machine is super fast and has the added benefit of radio frequency as well as laser technology to give those little suckers a really good blast!

You may think that laser hair removal is costly but not when you think about how much money you’ve already spent on razors, shaving cream and waxing and will continue to spend. Not to mention the time you’ll save…and hey that’s got to be worth something.

If you have teenage children considering laser hair removal, they will need to keep in mind that until their bodies fully mature, their more rapid hair growth may lead to extra needed treatments but they will still benefit from the reduction. There you have it, fun for the whole family!

So let’s change the course of next summer by getting on it now…seriously, call me.

Take a good look in your magnified mirror, you know the one that shows you every enlarged pore and chin hair that only your friends under forty can spot.
Now take a scan of your skin, ‘post’ summer holidays.
Have you noticed a few extra brownish spots that weren’t there in May? Perhaps there are some new tiny red veins on your cheeks from those days out on that boat or maybe your skin now has that “acid wash jeans” look from dehydration.

Never fear my friend, we can help reverse some of that damage!
Fall, winter and spring are your best times for IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments, simply because you can’t be tanned when you have this treatment. So if you overdid it this summer, wait a few months until your tan fades.
IPL is one of the best things you can do for your skin in order to slow down or even reverse the aging process.
How it works:
Pulses of high energy light are sent into the skin, convert into heat and travel through to the area where there is the most melanin, meaning browns and reds. These areas are then “toasted” and the spots turn a highly attractive, dirt brown color but will flake off in 4-10 days and can be covered with makeup in the meantime. When the light reaches the reds, the blood in the vessels coagulates and your immune system takes it away within about 2 weeks.
How many treatments you will need really depends of the amount of damage you have and what kind of damage it is. Sometimes the sunspots will be mostly gone in 2 strong treatments but the reds tend to come back. So my best advice is to ALWAYS buy the money saving package. Even if your skin has cleared in a just a few treatments, the continued collagen stimulation and touch ups you will need will be covered and you can use the last few treatments later through the year when you see your results start to fade.
Remember the key with IPL is the same with all anti-aging treatments – keep them up!
It’s much more difficult to reverse damage than it is to maintain a good result.
At the Anti-Aging Clinic, our price for a single treatment of IPL is $450 but the package price of 4 treatments is $1400 with a $400 savings.
