Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler whose active ingredient is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), a mineral-based substance chemically similar to material found naturally in bone. It consists of tiny CaHA microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. This combination gives it a dual character: the gel gives volume straight away, while the microspheres remain in the tissue and act as a structural component. It is generally a thicker, more structural product than many hyaluronic acid gels, and it is injected by trained clinicians for volume and contour where a firmer support is appropriate.
Radiesse works in two stages. Immediately after injection, the gel carrier gives volume and lift in the treated area. Over the following weeks and months the gel is gradually absorbed by the body, while the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres act as a scaffold that encourages the body to produce its own collagen around them. This means the initial effect comes from the gel, and a longer-term contribution comes from the newly formed collagen. Eventually the microspheres themselves are broken down and absorbed by the body, so the effect is not permanent.
Radiesse is generally used where firmer, more structural volume and contour support are appropriate, such as deeper folds and areas benefiting from a scaffolding effect. It is also used for hand rejuvenation, where it can restore volume to the back of the hands, and a diluted (hyperdilute) technique is sometimes used by clinicians to address skin quality over broader areas; some of these uses may be off-label and the formally authorized areas differ by region. Because it is a firmer, structural product, it is generally not used for very superficial fine lines or delicate areas such as the lips, where softer products are preferred.

A notable characteristic of Radiesse is that it combines an immediate volumizing effect with a gradual collagen-stimulating effect, so a change is visible soon after treatment while a longer-term contribution develops over time. Its firmer consistency can make it well suited to providing structure and contour in appropriate areas, and its effect from a treatment tends to last a meaningful period, though it is temporary and eventually diminishes. Outcomes depend on the area, the amount used, dilution and the injector's technique, and results are not guaranteed. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, it cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
Radiesse should be injected only by appropriately trained clinicians after assessment, and its firmer, more structural nature makes correct placement particularly important. Common, usually temporary effects include swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness and firmness at the injection site, and lumps or nodules can occur. As with any dermal filler, a rare but serious risk is accidental injection into or compression of a blood vessel, which can affect blood flow and, very rarely, the skin or vision, and requires urgent medical attention. Importantly, because it is not made of hyaluronic acid, it cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, so it is generally avoided in areas where reversibility is a priority. It is generally avoided where there is active infection, known allergy to a component, or certain medical conditions, and its use in pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally not advised. A physician-led consultation is needed to confirm suitability.

Conditions It May Help Address
The relationship between a technology and a concern depends on the treatment plan, patient assessment, and how the technology is being used.
Visible facial creases that develop from repeated expression, collagen loss, sun exposure and skin dryness.
Creases around the mouth, from the nose to the mouth corners and from the mouth toward the chin, that deepen with movement, volume change, and tissue descent.
Reduced cheek fullness and downward tissue movement that can create hollows or deepen nearby folds.
Hollowing or darkness beneath the eyes from shadowing, pigment, visible vessels, thin skin, or volume loss.
A softer or less-defined jawline shaped by chin structure, facial fat, muscle size, skin laxity, or tissue descent.
Reduced firmness and mild tissue descent related to aging and the decline of collagen and elastin.
An under-projected or recessed chin that can affect the facial profile and jawline balance.
Visible differences between the two sides of the face involving bone, muscle, fat, or soft tissue.
Lips with reduced fullness, shape, projection, or border definition, sometimes with mild asymmetry.
A smile that shows more upper gum tissue than a person would prefer.
Thinning skin, more visible veins and tendons, spots, and reduced fullness on the backs of the hands.
Concerns about penile girth, circumference or proportion — sometimes searched as penis enlargement or male enhancement — whether from perception, natural variation, or a change after injury or treatment.

FAQ
Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, a mineral-based substance chemically similar to a component found naturally in bone, suspended in a water-based gel carrier. The gel provides immediate volume while the microspheres stimulate the body's own collagen over time. Both components are gradually broken down and absorbed, so the effect is not permanent.
Radiesse is generally firmer and more structural than many hyaluronic acid gels and gives both immediate volume and gradual collagen stimulation. A key practical difference is that it is not made of hyaluronic acid, so it cannot be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase. Which product suits your goals is a decision best made with your clinician.
Because it is a firmer, structural product, Radiesse is generally not used in the lips or very superficial fine lines, where softer, dissolvable products are usually preferred. It is more often used where structural volume and contour support are appropriate. Your clinician can advise on the most suitable product for a given area.
The effect is temporary; the immediate volume comes from the gel, while collagen stimulation contributes over time, and the overall result eventually diminishes as the material is absorbed. How long it lasts varies with the area, the amount used, dilution and the individual. Your clinician can give you a more specific expectation for your situation.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, so it is generally avoided where reversibility is a priority. This is one reason careful clinician selection and appropriate placement are especially important. Discuss the implications with your clinician before treatment.
